Keshcarrigan Village, Co Leitrim, Ireland, broadcast March 17th 2024
Saint Patrick's Day at 6pm, I presented a radio show called, signposts about 'Keshcarrigan Village' on Shannonside Northern Sound. I spoke to a lady who recently moved to the area, and set up a singing group, I also got to chat with a local author living in the area, who at the time of this radio show, is currently writing a new book, and a retired Garda will talk to me about his time working, living and raising a family in the Barracks in Keshcarrigan village. I also talked to the Keshcarrigan Development Association about their future plans for the Barracks and I heard about a Festival coming to the village later in 2024. I caught up with recent visitors to the area, who talked to me ab...

At the time breakfast was cooking, and everyone was looking forward to what the day had in store. I chatted with Des Foley proprietor of Gerties Bar and Restaurant not forgetting Golf Society, he spoke to me about the great help the club...

On this show, I speak to Padraig and Jim about growing up in Ireland and what it was like for them as boys. We talk about serving at Mass when it was in Latin, we also talk about the Stations, which was a Mass celebrated in a house, a tradition that still occurs today, albeit at a much lower scale I would guess than in times gone by. I also speak with Jim Gralton, who shares stories, about his ...

This video captures the Drumshanbo St Patrick's Day Parade close to the starting point in 2018. I forgot I had this video until I found it recently which is why I am late uploading it. I hope watching the floats from that days brings back happy memories to you if you were there and especially taking into account that no parade took place in 2020 or in 2021 due to Covid 19 and restrictions curre...

I remember an excellent shop, Early's. And Dr. Deasy.
So nice to hear Noel McPartland speaking: a living institution in Drumshanbo! Looking forward to getting back to Ireland and Drumshanbo soon. Congratulations on your works. Just subscribed to your channel. Cheers and slán!
Well done

Great memory Mike Sean plunkett
Great stuff mike
Excellent, really enjoyed this my grandfather worked on the line
That is a great discussion. 👏😉Thank you for undertaking this wonderful project. What a pity we were not taught this in secondary school in Ireland 1960's. In his time, his writing was ridiculed to the point that even in my school days 'Trollope' became a byword for bad writing (and women of bad character!).
I wonder why. It seems very strange to me from little NZ, a world away!
Mike, as a boy of about 5 years, I just remember these trains at Dromod station in 1958. My father Jack and his brother Michael Frank worked at the station during WW2, transfering coal from the narrow gauge to the main line wagons. Great testament to them and their colleagues in difficult times. Best Regards Valentine Shanley
Declan Bree has done so much good for the people of Sligo over the years!!
Wonderful stuff! I was amongst a large party of School Children who were on board the last (return) trip between Drumshanbo and Arigna. I was aged 8 at the time and I still fondly remember it.
Lovely video
God rest their Gentle souls Tom and Brendan may they rest in peace
Fair well great and kind man giving your life for others .I used to be a Franciscsn many years ago but left a great Religious order

Great to find footage like this at a time when there were far fewer cameras and expensive film development costs
What is the name of the music at 2:11 ?
Nice one Mike, great video, love owt like this. Of course I don't remember 1947 but I do remember 1963..

The Coal cars reminded me of when a friend, a resident of southern Lough Allen stated that he could hand dig his own coal " Anthracite" he called it, for £20 a tonne in the vicinity.
Can anyone add any more information/photos/film etc?

Brilliant! Just brilliant! Loved it from start to finish. Sometimes I wished I could have seen the people and the photos but, it seems so Irish for it to be verbal stories. Slainte from your biggest fan in the USA. 😃👍
Thank you Joe for your message and lovely words, really glad you enjoyed listening to this. I have further stories coming in the months ahead, which I hope you will also enjoy. All the best for now. Mike
My husband, John Laird is the great great grandson of Caleb Laird. We only discovered this interesting family history recently through my husband's cousin. Really fascinating! We hope to visit Drumshanbo as a family, before too long and see it all for ourselves!
Thank you Penny I am delighted you found this video and can understand how helpful the information is, when you visit be sure to try and contact Noel who I know would have lots more stories for you and family, he is a mind of information, we were limited with the time we had but this show could have gone on for a day with Noels stories and recall. All the best for now. Mike
Just wondering was that in leitrim was it a fair day and is it on this year? Thanks
Loved going in always had a smile for everyone .👍
Would love to hear the rest of this podcast. Can you post please? My grandfather was one of the men involved in the Sheemore ambush.
My grandmother was Mary Wrynn, from Fenagh. When my mother and I visited Fenagh, my mother's first cousin, Paddy Wrynn, took us to the area and told us the story of Selton Hill. Those poor men who lost their lives will never be forgotten. Eileen

Very interesting Michael.
Beautiful tribute to Tom Mike. God rest Tom Brendan and all deceased members of the Royal and Big 8 bands and indeed all the showband fraternity who have passed on. Many's the enjoyable night they gave us. Ni beidh a leitheid aris ann.
And that winter my father nearly died of double pneumonia. I was 4 then.
Double Pneumonia!!! That was a scary time for everyone, I can just imagine the worry that brought at the time, I would imagine your father had to go to the hospital at the time to get cared for? And the trip there depending on where he lived could have some interesting stories?
Larry was a true character....we used to go on the doss from school for a half day,one Friday a month and spend it with Larry in the shop.....good times
I remember going into Noel McPartlands shop every morning before going to the tech buying our morning dose of sweets off his wife Margaret,a real lady she is....
Hi Mike my father told me he remembered walking to school in Huge snow drifts here in Anglesey in 47 ! He past away in 2017 he was 78 🏴
May your father Rest In Peace, with the area mentioned and including Ireland and UK, the amount of snow that fell must have been huge, I would guess those school journeys were great fun in the snow, with lots of games and excitement.
Hi Mike I’ve just corrected some of my spelling 😂😂I did have some wine😂that’s my excuse anyway 🍷hope your all and stay safe😷
My mum remembers the 46-47 winder in rural Suffolk; England. She told me that her mother had to cut wood from the hedges due to fuel shortages. She said it was very very cold 🥶
Life was so different from then to now, now we can go to the shops or order online and we have it almost within a day, but for anyone from this time there were lots of jobs involved and everyone relied on one another, I don't think we will ever see anything like it - but with climate change who knows what is possible. Imagine though your mother at the time and so many like her trying to heat the house with what they could find out of hedges, the thoughts of having to go out in the cold and search through snow drenched hedges to see what bits you could get for the fire to try and stay warm and keep everyone else warm.
I. Love you 💕
Lovely tribute Mike Well Done

Hello Mike, I am the Great Grand Son of Caleb S Laird, and have just returned from a trip to Drumshanbo with my Father David Burrowes eldest Sone of Norma Burrowes ne Laird where we met with Noel.
Hello John, lovely to hear from you, I bet that was an enjoyable meeting with Noel and that he had some wonderful memories and stories to share with you, Drumshanbo is a great town, it can move forward and yet keep many features of the past which are important for our heritage and also for visitors like you returning. I hope you enjoy your stay in Drumshanbo and Lovely Leitrim, give my regards to Noel if you see him. There are some other programs on my channel which you might find interesting. I spoke to Noel about Caleb on a Narrow-gauge railway show and also the Lairds family are mentioned in many videos which include photographs of the town from yesteryear.
Love lovely Leitrim
